Shinji Aramaki joined Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. after graduated from University of Tokyo in 1982.  He has been conducted research mainly in photo-electrically functional organic materials and devices, such as organic photoconductors for electrophotography, organic transistor, organic photovoltaics, organic nonlinear materials, etc.  He has been involved in standardization of nano-electronic in IEC/TC113 since 2012 and he became a convenor of WG9 in 2014, where organic photovoltaics is discussed.  In 2023, he started working for National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) as an invited senior researcher and Toin University of Yokohama as a visiting professor.

Prof. Derya Baran, originally from Turkey, received her BS and MS degrees from Chemistry Department at Middle East Technical University in 2008 and 2010, respectively and doctorate degree from Friedrich-Alexander Erlangen-Nürnberg University in Materials Science and Engineering in 2014. She then received the Helmholtz Association postdoc grant and pursued joint post-doctoral studies at Jülich Research Center (Germany) and Imperial Collage London (UK). Since January 2017, she is a faculty at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). As of 2021 she is an Associate professor in Material Science and Engineering Program and co-affiliated with Chemistry Program. Her research group (OMEGALAB) focus on the engineering smart materials for printed energy harvesting applications and integrated electronics.

She is selected for MIT Technology Review’s 2018 list of ‘35 Innovators under 35’ and selected as ‘Talented 12’ in Chemistry given by ACS C&EN. She is co-founder of a climate-tech company ‘RedSea’ working for feeding the world sustainably whilst reducing the footprint on water and energy. She is a member of Global Young Academy since 2020 and a Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry.

Francesca Brunetti, FRSC, is Associated professor at Electronic Engineering Dept. of the University of Rome Tor Vergata. Cofounder CHOSE (www.chose.it) her current research is focused on the analysis, design and manufacture of electronic and optoelectronic devices (solar cells and modules and energy storage systems on rigid and flexible substrates), through the use of nanomaterials, organic semiconductors and perovskites. Coordinator of several national and international projects, she authored more than 110 Paper and 6 patents. She is Associated Editor of “Sustainable Energy and Fuels” from Royal Society of Chemistry.

 

My research centers on hybrid materials, specifically metal halide perovskites, with a goal of delving into their fundamental optical and electrical properties. The objective is to uncover their potential applications in optoelectronics. The primary focus lies in crafting strategies for designing and synthesizing advanced hybrid materials that demonstrate enhanced performance. Moreover, I explore the integration of these materials into various optoelectronic devices like solar cells, LEDs, and photodetectors, employing processes compatible with industrial settings.

This research aims to contribute to the advancement of the field of optoelectronics and potentially have an impact on sustainable energy technology.

Ludmila Cojocaru, received her PhD from Bordeaux University (France) in physical chemistry of condensed materials and their application in liquid-state dye-sensitized solar cells. Subsequently, she was awarded by the Japan Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS) as a post-doc fellow in the framework of the Japanese-French Associate Laboratory for Next Generation Photovoltaic Cells (LIA Next-PV) (LiaNextPV) at the University of Tokyo, and, then, continued working in a national (NEDO) Japanese project at the same University. Her work in Japan was focused on the solidification of liquid-state dye-sensitized solar cells then moved to the perovskite solar cells. Working in the field of perovskite solar cells since the earlier stage of their discovery, she concentrated her work on the fabrication of high-performance devices focusing on the interface engineering of perovskite and providing a possible reason for the origin of IV hysteresis. Later, she moved to the University of Freiburg (Germany), focusing on the evaporation of perovskite for tandem solar cells application, working in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy (Germany). Before taking up her current position as a researcher at the Toin University of Yokohama (Japan), she also worked as a Junior Researcher at Bordeaux University (France) in an Initiative of Excellence “Make Our Planet Great Again”, where she was engaged in the project focused on the fabrication of sustainable energy conversion-storage devices by combining perovskite solar cells and supercapacitors, devices connected through a common electrode based on carbon extracted from biomass. Her current research focus is on the fabrication of sustainable perovskite solar cells and developing lead-free absorbers.

Alexander received his diploma in physics from the LMU Munich in 2003. In 2008 he was awarded his PhD for his thesis “Charge carrier transport layers for efficient organic semiconductor devices” by the University of Karlsruhe (TH). In 2016, he accomplished his Habilitation. Since 2020, Alexander is Professor for photovoltaics at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Research interests include organic and perovskite solar cells, perovskite-inspired materials for light-harvesting, semi-transparent solar cells for building integration and mobile applications, organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) and printed electronics in general – from fundamental processes to applications.

 

PhD physicist with 30 years experience in research, industry, academia and CSIRO, including photovoltaics (since 1998), photonics, thin films, surface science and ion beam technology. Founded CSIRO’s photovoltaics research program, now operating commercially as PV Performance Laboratory, the only accredited PV measurement facility in the Southern Hemisphere. Graduate, Australian Institute of Company Directors. Former Chair, Australian Photovoltaics Institute. Australia’s representative on the IEC international standards committee for photovoltaic modules.

Tomas Edvinsson is professor of Solid State Physics at Uppsala University, Sweden, and professor of Energy Materials at Newcastle University, United Kingdom. He received his Ph.D. 2002 at Uppsala University, performed post-doctoral work at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, and research for BASF AG until 2007, after which he established his research group at Uppsala University and became full professor 2017.  He is currently leading R&D projects from the Swedish Research Council within the photophysics of perovskite solar cell materials, an adjacent project from the Swedish Energy agency, renewable energy driven electrolysis in a H2020 project and from the Swedish Research council for sustainability. He has authored and co-authored 140+ peer-reviewed scientific papers, 8 book chapters, 2 books, and holds 6 patents. His research focus on fundamental investigations of low dimensional energy materials using spectroscopic, electrochemical, and theoretical methods.

JF Guillemoles is a CNRS Research Director, head of the IPVF joint lab (CNRS- E. Polytechnique- ENSCP-and SAS IPVF), Paris-Saclay (France) aiming at the development of photovoltaics, and former director of a joint lab with the University of Tokyo, NextPV. He is currently active on high efficiency concepts for solar energy conversion, new applications for photovoltaic, luminescence-based characterization techniques (esp. Hyperspectral imaging), and modeling of photovoltaic materials and devices. He is part time Professor at Ecole Polytechnique. He is author/co-author of more than 400 publications (peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, patents, proceedings …) and editor for Progress in Photovoltaics (Wiley) and EPJPV (EDP). He was awarded in 2022 the Ivan Peyches prize of the French Academy of Science.

Prof. Marina Freitag is a Professor of Energy and a Royal Society University Research Fellow at Newcastle University. Her academic foundation was formed at the Free University of Berlin, culminating with a Ph.D. obtained from Rutgers University. Following the completion of her doctoral studies, postdoctoral research was conducted at both Uppsala University and EPFL, enhancing her expertise in renewable energy.

The innovative concept of “zombie solar cells” was introduced by her, marking a significant progression in the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells. Present research focus is centered on ambient photovoltaics, with an emphasis on sustainable materials rooted in coordination polymers. The objective is the development of efficient, sustainable technologies based on low-dimensional coordination materials. Such efforts are aimed at supplying AI-integrated Internet of Things devices with autonomous energy, pushing the boundaries of traditional energy consumption paradigms.

Eugene A. Katz (http://www.bgu.ac.il/~keugene/index.htm ) received his MSc degree (1982) in Semiconductor Materials Science and Ph. D. (1990) in solid state physics from the National University of Science and Technology “MISIS”. In 1995, he joined the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and has been working in the Department for Solar Energy and Environmental Physics ever since (now as a full professor). His research interests include a wide range of photovoltaic materials and devices, such as organic and perovskite-based photovoltaics, concentrator solar cells operated at ultra-high solar concentration (up to 10,000 suns), etc. He has published 145 peer-reviewed papers on these topics as well as a popular scientific book and a number of popular articles on the history of science and fullerene-like structures in nanomaterials, living organisms, and architecture. Based on the latter activity he has developed and is teaching a unique interdisciplinary course “Bridges between fine art, architecture, mathematics and natural sciences: cases of fullerenes, polyhedra, symmetry” (integrating students from almost all faculties of in the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev).

In 2018 Prof. Katz was awarded the IAAM Medal (by the International Association of Advanced Materials) for outstanding research in the field of New Energy Materials & Technology.

I completed MS and Phd degrees at Moscow State University with a specialization in semiconductor physics. I continued the research at Ben-Gurion University (Israel) where I focused on the stability of perovskite solar cells, especially their outdoor stability. I continued to develop this topic in the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin (Germany) where I work now.

My research field strongly connects me with the ISOS community. I was happy to be part of regular conferences, past and ongoing community experiments and the development of the stability consensus statement that was reported in 2020.

Prof. Kim received his Ph.D. degree from Department of Materials Engineering of the University of Tokyo (Japan) in 2011 under the guidance of Prof. Takashi Kondo. Following his Ph.D. degree, he worked at Samsung Electronics (LED division, advanced development group) as a senior engineer from 2011 to 2016. In 2016, he joined Segawa group of the research center for advanced science and technology (Japan) as a research fellow. Since Sep. 2019, he started his professor career at Department of Applied Chemistry of Konkuk University (Rep. of Korea).

Nikos Kopidakis is a research scientist at NREL and the technical lead of the PV Cell and Module performance group. He has over 20 years of experience in PV research, including silicon, dye-sensitized and organic PV. His interests cover the performance characterization of PV cells and modules of any size and technology and new measurement techniques for novel and emerging PV. He has previously worked on new materials for PV applications and in spectroscopic techniques for characterizing their photophysics.

Ajay Kumar Jena received his Master’s degree and Ph.D. from the Dept. of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India in 2007 and 2013 respectively. As a part of his doctoral thesis, he worked on dye-sensitized solar cells. Then, he worked as a post-doctoral researcher (2013 – 2018) and as research assistant professor (2018 – 2023) at Toin University of Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan. Currently, he is working as a researcher at University of Tokyo. He has been working on perovskite solar cells (PSCs) since about a decade with his interests revolving around different challenging but interesting problems of PSCs. Some of his past research in the field includes understanding the anomalous J-V hysteresis and performance instability/stability issues with organic-inorganic hybrid PSCs, developing all-inorganic perovskites (black phase stabilization and performance improvement), and using Pb-free materials like Ag-Bi-halides/sulfides as environmental-friendly alternatives. His current interest is to improve the operational stability of high-efficiency PSCs through better understanding of the performance deterioration both in short and long terms.

Dr. Chang-Qi Ma received his PhD degree at the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2003. After that he was a postdoctoral research assistant at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, UK. In year 2004, he joined Institute of Organic Chemistry II and Advanced Materials at as a Humboldt research fellow. From January 2007 till May 2011, he did his Habilitation at the same institute and was the group leader of dendritic oligothiophenes. Since June 2011 he was appointed as a professor of chemistry at Suzhou Institute of Nano-Tech and Nano-Bionics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China. His research interests include solution processable organic and inorganic materials for photovoltaics, printing processing for polymer and perovskite solar cells, degradation mechanism and stability improvement of printed solar cells. He has published over 180 papers and filed over 30 patents.

After completing a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Industrial Chemistry at the University of Bologna (Italy), Dr. Silvia Mariotti obtained her PhD degree in Physics at the Stephenson Institute for Renewable Energy, the University of Liverpool (UK), with Prof. K. Durose, where she worked on perovskite solar cells and was awarded the PhD prize for the year 2019. She then obtained a Postdoc position working in the same field, between the University of Bordeaux (LCPO) and University of Tokyo (RCAST) in Prof. G. Hadziioannou and Prof. H. Segawa, respectively. After, she moved to Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin (HZB) to work on perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells, under the supervision of Prof. S. Albrecht, where together with the team, she fabricated a 32.5% World record device (2023). She was then awarded a JSPS / Humboldt fellowship for a postdoc in Prof. Y. Qi’s group at the Okinawa Institute for Science and Technology (OIST), Japan, where she is currently working on perovskite solar cells and mentoring PhD students.

Takurou N. Murakami is a team leader of the Organic-Inorganic Hybrid PV Team, Global Zero Emission Research Center (GZR), National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST). He is currently leading an R&D project for the commercialization of perovskite solar cells under the Green Innovation Fund project. In this project, AIST supports companies in their technological development. Murakami received his PhD degree in engineering from Toin University of Yokohama in 2005 and worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the laboratory of Prof. Michael Graetzel at EPFL before becoming a lecturer at Toin University of Yokohama in 2007. In 2005, he received the Scientific American 50 Award for his invention of the photocapacitor, which combines photoelectric conversion and storage in the same device. In 2006, he received the Honda-Fujishima Award for his work on plastic dye-sensitized solar cells and photocapacitors. In addition, in collaboration with Professor Henry Snaith of Oxford University, he was involved in the invention of the world’s first solid-state perovskite solar cell, which was published in Science in 2012 and became the starting point for the development of perovskite solar cells worldwide.

Prof. Dr. Qing Shen earned her Ph.D. degree from the University of Tokyo and now she is a professor of the University of Electro-Communications, Japan. In 2014, she got the Excellent Women Scientist Award of the Japan Society of Applied Physics. Her current research interest focuses on (1) quantum dots, nanomaterials, and their applications in optoelectronic devices such as solar cells and LED; (2) time resolved laser spectroscopy and their applications to study photoexcited carrier dynamics (such as hot carrier, multiple exciton generation, charge separation and recombination) in various optoelectronic devices such as quantum dot solar cells, perovskite solar cells and organic solar cells.

Dr. Chun-Guey Wu is a senior professor in Department of Chemistry, National Central University, Taiwan.  She had worked on new generation photovoltaics for almost 20 years.  Recently, her work focuses more on the development of the large-area, high-efficiency perovskite solar modules. She had published around 200 papers, awarded 20 patents, and several technology transfers in her academic career.
